Program Overview Course Schedule

Teaching English as Second Language (TESL)

Help New Arrivals Learn English as Their Second Language
Teachers of English as a Second Language generally work with immigrants and foreign nationals living in English-speaking countries. TESL teachers need special preparation to meet the unique challenges in settings where students have had some exposure to English but are still struggling. UCSC Extension in Silicon Valley offers a specialized sequence of courses in linguistics and education to prepare instructors to enter the TESL  field. The program provides teachers with the knowledge, strategies, and practice they need to feel comfortable teaching English classes to students of various levels and backgrounds. Join the hundreds of students who have completed this Certificate and gone on to rewarding careers.

Earn an Internationally Recognized Certificate
Our TESL certificate program is recognized worldwide and designed to prepare teachers who have no formal training in ESL. The practical curriculum provides teacher-trainees first-hand experience teaching second-language learners. Our classes are small and friendly. Our faculty consists of working professionals who have field experience teaching English as a second and foreign language here and internationally. Mentoring is a key part of the program, and our students may communicate with mentors via e-mail for up to one year to help with lesson planning or curriculum questions.

Prerequisites
We recommend you attend "TESL/TEFL Certificate Program Overview."

Recommended Course Sequence
TESL and TEFL students are welcome to take the first three courses of either Certificate and apply them towards the appropriate Certificate as the classes are the same. The pre-practicum and practicum are taken at the end, but the other classes can be taken in any order.
